  • North Carolina Picture Book Award Nominees 2008   This is a collaborative effort between Ms. Feinman, Ms. Edwards and Ms. Uhrig at Diggs Elementary School. We will be reading and reviewing all the nominees for the North Carolina Picture Book Awards for 2008. Have fun!
  • Tarheel Readers is a collection of free, easy-to-read, and accessible books on a wide range of topics. The books may be downloaded as slide shows in PowerPoint, Impress, or Flash format. Each book can be speech enabled and accessed using multiple interfaces, including touch screens, the IntelliKeys with custom overlays, and 1 to 3 switches. We have books that are intended for teenagers who are just learning to read. You may find some books that are inappropriate for your students; don’t use those. (great for Interactive White Boards)

  • Online Children's Stories  There are a lot of stories available on the Internet to read or download. Some of them are from well-known books, others can be found only online.

  • Lit2Go is a online clearing house of books and poems in MP3 format. You can download these works to an MP3 player (ipod, zune etc.), or let students listen on the computer using Windows Media Player or ITunes. You can search the database by author, title, keywords and READABILITY LEVEL!

  • Literature Map could be useful for students who have read all their favorite author's books and are looking for other good books to read.  Finding books that kids will like can be a difficult task. Literature Map is a tool that might make that process easier. Literature Map provides a web of authors you might like based on authors that you already enjoy reading. To use Literature Map just type an author's name into the search box and webbed list of authors will be displayed. The authors' names closest to the author whose name you entered are the authors whose work you're most likely to enjoy.

  • James Patterson’s Read Kiddo Read is a website dedicated to making kids readers for life.  This site has a wealth of good information and resources that will help you foster a love of reading in your classroom.  this site has outstanding book lists for every age group.  These are tried and true favorites kids books.  In addition, it has some outstanding features such as a can’t miss reading list just for boys, and an “if your kid likes…” that matches up popular kids toys and movies with books that they may enjoy.  There is a great book-based lesson plan exchange that uses popular kids books as the basis for lessons.  Read Kiddo Read has some audio interviews with favorite children’s authors complete with a written transcript.

  • Book Wink is an absolutely incredible site to motivate students in 3rd through 8th grade to read.  Through podcasts and web video Book Wink introduces students to books that will help get students excited about reading.  Video book talks are about 3 minutes in length and introduce students to a topic, and the additional read-alikes that can be found on the Book Wink website.  Books can be searched by grade, subject, author, or title.  Subscribe to the video podcats to automatically receive the newest book talks.  Scroll towards the bottom of this page to see was to integrate this in the classroom.
